The New City Catechism

Question #32

Q. What do justification and sanctification mean?

A. Justification means our declared righteousness before God, made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection for us. Sanctification means our gradual, growing righteousness, made possible by the Spirit’s work in us.

BIG Idea

“God justifies those whom he has chosen and sanctifies his chosen people.”

Weekly Bible Passage and Monthly Memory Verse

Passage: 1 Peter 1:1-2

Monthly Memory Verse: “31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” (Romans 8:31-34)

Prayer (ACTS Method)

These are ways to pray in light of the truth learned this week. Of course, pray for other things as a family!

·      Adoration: Praise God for justifying us.

·      Confession: Confess when we do not live in light of our justification.

·      Thanksgiving: Thank God that He continues the work he began.

·      Supplication: Ask God for grace to grow in righteousness.
