The New City Catechism

Question #17

Q. What is idolatry?

A. Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator.

BIG Idea

“Idolatry is loving something in the created world more than God, the Creator.”

What kind of idols do you have in your life? Because of sin and our fallen nature, we are, tragically, susceptible to loving things more than God. This may be sports, video games, cars, money, fashion, family, education, praise, even ourselves! Because of this, we deserve God’s judgement because He is the only one deserving of our worship and unrivaled adoration. In His kindness and grace, He gave us His only Son who died for idolaters like us, so that we might be forgiven if we place our faith in Him. Would you believe in the risen Jesus?

Weekly Bible Passage and Monthly Memory Verse

Passage: Romans 1:18-25

Monthly Memory Verse: “11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” (Titus 2:11-14)

Prayer (ACTS Method)

These are ways to pray in light of the truth learned this week. Of course, pray for other things as a family!

·      Adoration: Praise God as the true source of love and adoration.

·      Confession: Confess the idols in your life, whatever they may be.

·      Thanksgiving: Thank God that that He gives us grace to destroy these idols and place our eyes back on Christ.

·      Supplication: Ask God for grace to worship Him alone.
