The New City Catechism

Question #16

Q. What is sin?

A. Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, not being or doing what he requires in the law.

BIG Idea

“Sin is rejecting or ignoring God’s moral law and rebelling against him.”

All have sinned and broken God’s law. Because we are sons and daughters of Adam, we are born in sin. We think evil things and do evil things. These thoughts and actions reflect our wicked heart. How desperately we need a Savior! Thank God for sending His only Son, who did not sin, but lived a life we never could and died a death we deserved. This is so in order that all who may believe in Him would be counted, not as a sinner, but as a saint. What a glorious Gospel!

Weekly Bible Passage and Monthly Memory Verse

Passage: 1 John 3:4-10

Monthly Memory Verse: “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-26)

Prayer (ACTS Method)

These are ways to pray in light of the truth learned this week. Of course, pray for other things as a family!

·      Adoration: Praise God that He has sent His Son into the world.

·      Confession: Confess our hopelessness as sinners apart from grace.

·      Thanksgiving: Thank God that that He has provided hope and salvation in Christ.

·      Supplication: Ask God for grace to see more of our sin and, yet, to see more of Jesus, who cleanses us from all sin.
