The New City Catechism

Question #15

Q. Since no one can keep the law, what is its purpose?

A. That we may know the holy nature of God, and the sinful nature of our hearts; and thus our need of a Savior.

BIG Idea

“The law serves to reveal sin, to guide, and to communicate the character of God.”

Although all have sinned and are unable to keep the law, it does not mean that the law is without purpose. As our catechism question teaches, it reveals more about God, our sin, our need for Christ, and the pattern we are to walk in light of the Gospel. The 10 Commandments, therefore, are important to the Christian life!

Weekly Bible Passage and Monthly Memory Verse

Passage: Romans 3:19-20

Monthly Memory Verse: “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-26)

Prayer (ACTS Method)

These are ways to pray in light of the truth learned this week. Of course, pray for other things as a family!

·      Adoration: Praise God that He has revealed Himself in His law.

·      Confession: Confess our great need for Christ in view of God’s holiness.

·      Thanksgiving: Thank God that that He has given us His law, so that we may know Him and closely follow Him in, by, and through Christ.

·      Supplication: Ask God for grace to grow in confessing and killing sin as it is revealed by knowing the law.
