The New City Catechism

Question #14

Q. Did God create us unable to keep his law?

A. No, but because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve, we are all born in sin and guilt, unable to keep God’s law.

BIG Idea

“God created Adam and Eve with the ability to perfectly keep his law. Sin now prevents the law from being kept.”

Adam and Eve were given the perfect opportunity to keep the law of God; however, they disobeyed the Lord. As a result, the curse of the Fall has extended to all of their offspring — that means you and me! We are born in sin and, consequently, unable to keep God’s holy law. From our head to our feet, we are sinful. This is a horrible truth, but it teaches us that there is no room for self-righteousness and a proud heart. Further, it reveals our desperate need for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Weekly Bible Passage and Monthly Memory Verse

Passage: Romans 5:12-21

Monthly Memory Verse: “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-26)

Prayer (ACTS Method)

These are ways to pray in light of the truth learned this week. Of course, pray for other things as a family!

·      Adoration: Praise God that He is righteous and perfect.

·      Confession: Confess our sinfulness and inability of keeping the law of God.

·      Thanksgiving: Thank God that Christ obeyed the law in our stead, so that we might be counted as righteous.

·      Supplication: Ask God for grace to see more of our sin and, yet, more of the Lord Jesus and His Gospel.
